Prepared to respond: Philippine Red Cross empowers students with life-saving skills

written by Gleniela Juan (ICI College, Marketing Department Intern)

The Philippine Red Cross successfully conducted a Basic Life Saving Seminar at the IC Event Center, Santa Maria, Bulacan, aimed at equipping students with essential skills in responding to emergencies and emphasizing the importance of preparedness, responsibility, and saving lives.

The seminar was held as a three-day event from January 28 to 30, with NSTP freshmen students as the primary participants. Throughout the sessions, students were taught how to properly respond during emergency situations and the critical role they play as first responders in their communities.

One of the key topics discussed was the proper use of emergency hotlines, particularly the Santa Maria Emergency Hotline. The Philippine Red Cross emphasized that prank calling is strictly prohibited, sharing that out of approximately 300–400 calls received, only around 50 are legitimate emergency calls. These prank calls cause delays in responding to real emergencies and may lead to serious penalties once proven.

The speakers also introduced and explained the use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED)—a life-saving device used for patients experiencing cardiac arrest. They highlighted its purpose and importance in significantly increasing a patient’s chances of survival.

To reinforce learning, the seminar featured hands-on demonstrations and interactive activities, including proper bandaging techniques, CPR demonstrations, quizzes, and group activities. These practical exercises allowed students to actively participate and apply what they learned, making the seminar both informative and engaging.

Overall, the three-day seminar empowered students with life-saving knowledge and skills, reinforcing the value of readiness, discipline, and community responsibility in emergency situations.
